Written Answers - Judicial Appointments.
In accordance with Articles 13.9 and 35.1 of the Constitution, judicial appointments are made by the President on the advice of the Government.
Since I took up office on 15 December 1994, 31 judicial appointments have been made, details of which are contained in the following tabular statement. Seventeen of these appointments were to new posts arising out of the Courts and Court Officers Act, 1995 and the Courts Act, 1996. The balance of the appointments were required to fill normal vacancies. There is currently one vacancy in the High Court and one in the District Court, both of which will be filled when the procedures of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Board have been completed.
