Vol. 477 No. 2

Written Answers - Prisoner Transfers.

John O'Donoghue

Ceist:

236 Mr. O'Donoghue asked the Minister for Justice the progress, if any, made regarding the application of a person (details supplied) for a transfer to Portlaoise Prison pursuant to the Transfer of Sentenced Prisoners Act; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9090/97]

I have recently approved the application of the person referred to in the question. The necessary paperwork will be returned to the Home Office within the next few days. It is then a matter for the UK authorities and for the offender to decide if they will also consent to the transfer. There must be three-way prior consent from the sentenced person and from the authorities of both states for a transfer to take place. If the UK authorities and the offender consent to the transfer, an application will then be made to the High Court in Dublin for the necessary warrant authorising the taking of the offender into custody here and his continued detention. The Deputy can be assured that there will be no delay on the part of the Irish authorities in processing this application.
