336 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine the total number of staff in his ministerial offices and his Minister of State's offices; if he will give a breakdown of the status of all staff, whether temporary civil servants, permanent or non-established; if he will give comparison figures for the years 1988, 1993, 1995 and 1996; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Minister for the Marine (Mr. Barrett)

The total number of staff attached to my office, the office of the Minister of State and those of our predecessors, for each of the years 1988, 1993, 1995 and 1996 is indicated in the following table. There is no change in the 1997 staffing complement to that indicated for 1996 in either of our respective offices.

It should be noted that the numbers indicated in my office from 23 May 1995, with the exception of my private secretary, are shared equally with the Department of Defence, reflecting the dual ministerial responsibilities of the portfolio. Since 4 June 1996 my personal secretary has been employed on a part-time basis.
