151 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the estimated cost of staff in his ministerial offices, such as programme managers, advisers, support staff and other such related costs for 1997; and the comparative figures for 1993 and 1987. [9334/97]

The cost of staffing in my ministerial office, including employer PRSI, supperannuation payments and overheads, is estimated to be £474,737 for the year ending 31 January 1997. The comparative figure for 1993 was £363,391. As my Department was only formed in 1993, I cannot provide figures for 1987.

Ceist:

152 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Defence the estimated cost of staff in his ministerial offices, such as programme managers, advisers, support staff and other such related costs for 1997; and the comparative figures for 1993 and 1987. [9323/97]

The estimated cost of contract staff in the office of the Minister for the years 1987 and 1993 and the anticipated costs of such staff in 1997 is as follows:

Year

Minister's Office

1987

£27,142

1993

£44,293

1997

£54,506

In recent years the costs in relation to contract staff have been shared jointly between Defence and Marine reflecting the Minister's dual role. This sharing arrangement was not relevant in 1987.
