Ceist:20 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Justice the number of women in the Garda Síochána; the number of women holding a position above the rank of garda; the rank in each case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9150/97]

The Garda authorities have informed me that there are currently 868 female members in the Garda Síochána. This includes 56 who hold the rank of sergeant, six who hold the rank of inspector and two who hold the rank of superintendent.
