Vol. 477 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Restaurant Licences.

Seamus Brennan

Ceist:

23 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the number of late licences under the special restaurants' exemption which have been granted in each of the years from 1994 to 1996 on a county basis; and the revenue earned by the State from such applications. [9105/97]

The holder of a special restaurant licence is permitted to sell intoxicating liquor on weekdays between 12.30 p.m. and 12.30 a.m. on the following morning and on Sundays between 12.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. and between 6.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. Section 22 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988 prohibits the grant of a special exemption order in respect of a premises to which a special restauarant licence attaches.

Special restaurant licences are granted by the Revenue Commissioners on production of special restaurant certificates granted in the Circuit Court. I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the fee for the first licence is £3,000. Subsequent renewal applications are then made annually to the Revenue Commissioners, together with a renewal fee of £200.12.
