Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - House Grants.

Eric J. Byrne

Ceist:

148 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for the Environment the criteria governing application for and payment of the grant payable to purchasers of a new house; whether a grant is payable in order to assist the relevant spouse to purchase a house in order to re-establish a family home where that spouse has become legally separated and has signed over equity in the original family home to the other spouse. [9617/97]

The conditions governing new house grants normally preclude payment of a grant where the applicant or the spouse of the applicant had previously purchased or built, individually or with each other, another house for his-her occupation. However, a grant may be allowed where; the marriage of an applicant has been dissolved or annulled by court order, or the applicant is seperated under a court order or a deed of separation; and the applicant and any dependants are in need of housing; and the Minister is satisfied that refusal to pay a grant would cause undue hardship. Each such application is considered on its merits.
