Vol. 477 No. 5

Written Answers. - Motorised Transport Grant Scheme.

Mary Wallace

Ceist:

99 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Health whether the criteria which the health boards are obliged to apply to applications for grants for motorised transport assistance require that a person either needs transport for means of obtaining or retaining employment or that the person is considered to be in an isolated area; and if he will give a definition of living in an isolated area in this context. [9579/97]

, Limerick East): While the underlying purpose of the motorised transport grant scheme is to provide assistance to people who need a car in order to earn a living, health boards may also give sympathetic consideration to applications from people with a disability who live in very isolated circumstances and have serious transport problems. Assessment of an application for this grant, including a definition of living in an isolated area, is a matter for the relevant health board.
