Vol. 478 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Education Needs.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

105 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education the number of schools per county which cater for six or more students with a moderate mental handicap; the human resources available to each; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10873/97]

There are 33 special schools which cater for children with moderate mental handicap. The locations of these schools and the number per county is as follows: Cavan (1), Clare (1), Cork (3), Donegal (1), Dublin (7), Galway (1), Kerry (2), Kildare (2), Kilkenny (1), Louth (1), Limerick (1), Longford (1), Mayo (2), Meath (1), Roscommon (1), Sligo (1), Tipperary (2), Waterford (1), Wexford (1), Westmeath (1) and Wicklow (1).

There are a further 20 special classes for children with moderate mental handicap attached to ordinary primary schools. These special classes are located in Countries Carlow (4), Cork (3), Donegal (3), Galway (1), Laois (2), Offaly (1) and Westmeath (6). There is one class for children with moderate mental handicap at post primary level, located in County Cork.

All the above facilities would cater for more than six students.

Detailed information on overall staffing levels in each of these facilities is not readily available in my Department. However, if the Deputy has a particular school in mind, I will arrange to secure the necessary particulars.
