Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Airports Development.

Tony Killeen

Ceist:

18 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Transport.Energy and Communications the amount which has been provided by the State, by Aer Rianta and by SFADCo towards the marketing costs of Shannon airport in each of the years from 1994 to 1996; the 1997 allocation from each of these sources; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10832/97]

The amount spent on the direct marketing of Shannon airport in the years in question is as follows: 1994, £1.8 million; 1995. £2.76 million; 1996, £2.1 million; 1997, £2.1 million.

The details are in the table which I am circulating to Deputies.

The Deputy may recall that, in October 1994, Shannon Airport Marketing was set up to coordinate the marketing activities of Aer Rianta and Shannon Development in respect of Shannon airport. Prior to that, each of the bodies marketed the airport separately.

Funding for the new body in 1995 was provided by means of a grant from my Department. In the course of that year, it became apparent that the new structure was not optimal and, in October 1995, my predecessor announced that sole responsibility for marketing Shannon airport was being transferred to Aer Rianta. A grant-in-aid was provided by my Department in 1996 for this purpose.

Since January 1997, Aer Rianta has been funding the marketing of Shannon airport direct from its own resources.
