Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - County Galway Projects.

Noel Treacy

Ceist:

53 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Arts. Culture and the Gaeltacht the current position of a project (details supplied) in County Galway; the amount of money spent each year on the project since it commenced; the amount of money allocated for this project in 1997; the dale on which the project will be fully completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11083/97]

Satisfactory progress is being maintained on this important project. Construction of the lock chamber is nearing completion and dredging of the river bed will recommence later this year, water levels permitting. A lock house will be constructed also and a floating jetty will be positioned near the town. This type of mooring facility is required to cater for naturally fluctuating water levels along the river and for this reason a fixed marina would not he suitable.

The expenditure already incurred, and which will be expended on this project to the end of 1997, is as follows:

£

1994

50,000

1995

3,000

1996

205,000

1997

500,000(estimated)

It is expected to have the entire scheme available for use for the 1999 boating season but at this stage, it is not possible to give a precise date for full completion.
