Vol. 478 No. 3

Written Answers. - Erne Navigation Project.

Brendan Smith

Ceist:

54 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the current stage of the environmental impact study of the Erne Navigation project, south of Belturbet; when it is proposed to have this project proceed to tender; the level of funding, if any, provided for this project in 1997; the sources of funding, European or national, which will enable this project to be undertaken; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11084/97]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 27 of 20 February 1997 concerning this matter.

The Central Fisheries Board is continuing its investigations, the results of which will form part of the overall environmental impact assessment. Tender documents for the remainder of the environmental impact study (EIS) were recently re-issued to a number of consultancy firms. When these have been received and assessed, an appointment will he made.

The Deputy will appreciate that it is premature at this stage to specify the level of funding to be made available for the EIS process in 1997 or to address matter relating to funding of the project itself.
