Vol. 479 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Cecilia Keaveney

Ceist:

100 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Education whether there will be a revision of the school bus transport system for Whitecastle national school, Quigley's Point, County Donegal, to overcome current difficulties prior to the coming academic year; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13093/97]

As the level of service available to them is within my Department's guidelines, and the cost involved in providing an additional vehicle would be prohibitive, I do not propose to revise the school transport arrangements for the pupils in question.

In order to achieve an efficient and cost-effective transport service, vehicles frequently operate a number of runs to both primary and post-primary schools. Thus the time-table often requires some pupils to make an early start in the mornings and wait for some time in the evenings.

I understand that the parents of some children attending Whitecastle national school have opted for a privately operated service, which they find more convenient. However, the pupils in question could be accommodated on the official service, should they so wish.
