Vol. 480 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pension Provisions.

Richard Bruton

Ceist:

276 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he proposes to revise pension levels to £100 per person as part of the Programme for Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13985/97]

A key priority, as part of the Government action programme for older people is substantial social welfare increases, including increases in old age pension to £100 per week over a five year period. These commitments, as with other commitments in the Programme for Government, will have to be dealt with through the normal budgetary process.

This undertaking shows the Government's commitment to older people and is a recognition of both the special place of older people in the community and also of their contribution to the economy over the years. It recognises older peoples' contribution, through their endeavours and sacrifices, to the current favourable economic situation in this country.

The position of pensions — both Social Welfare and occupational — and pensioners generally will also arise for consideration in the context of the national pensions policy initiative. The Pensions Board will be submitting their report to me on this initiative before the end of the year.
