Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Services.

Paul McGrath

Ceist:

159 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health and Children if a payment is made to his Department by any EU member state to fund medical services to nationals or social insurance contributors of those states who are now resident in Ireland; and if so, the amount paid in each of the past five years. [16515/97]

The amounts received by my Department to cover the cost of providing medical services to the nationals of other EU member states residing in Ireland are as follows:

Year

£m

1992

50,480

1993

53,852

1994

54,062

1995

51,613

1996

58,662

The above amounts are extracted from the annual revised Estimates for the public services and represent the amounts received from the UK for medical services provided to their nationals resident in Ireland. Any sums received by my Department relate to retired pensioners, short-term visitors and dependants, families of persons insured and working in another EU member state. Ireland has waiver agreements with a number of countries because the numbers involved are small and the administrative complexities associated with presenting accounts for payment would not justify the sum of money involved.
