Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tenant Purchase Scheme.

Bernard Allen

Ceist:

162 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will make a statement on the ongoing problems in relation to the sale of local authority flats in line with Circular HRT14/89; and if he will set up an initiative to resolve the problems which have arisen in the Cork area in relation to the sale of the flats to long-term tenants. [16126/97]

I assume the Deputy is referring to a case involving a number of tenants of Cork Corporation who had sought to purchase their flats under the 1989 tenant purchase scheme, which was the subject of a Circuit Court judgment last June. The corporation had not completed the sales because of the various difficulties associated with the sale of flats which were outlined in the policy document Social Housing — The Way Ahead.

The sale of the flats in question by Cork Corporation under the 1989 tenant purchase scheme is entirely a matter for that authority, bearing in mind the terms of the recent court order, the advice of their legal advisers and the content of the offer letters issued by the corporation to the tenants concerned.
