Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

163 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the current position regarding the new sewerage scheme for Castledermot, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16145/97]

The preliminary report for this scheme was approved in 1986 and is being updated by the local authority at present. However, given the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage investment programme it is not possible to say when the scheme may be advanced.

Dan Neville

Ceist:

164 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will respond to the request of the Kildimo and Pallaskenry action group for a meeting within the next ten days to discuss the concerns of the people of the area regarding the change in the source of the water supply servicing the two areas consequential on the decision to connect the distribution systems on foot of the extension of the Pallaskenry and Kildimo water scheme, County Limerick. [16148/97]

Dan Neville

Ceist:

165 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when it is planned to complete phase 2 of the Kildimo and Pallaskenry water scheme, County Limerick; when it is planned to commence this phase; and the date of completion of the phase. [16149/97]

Dan Neville

Ceist:

166 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will give details of the sanctioning by his Department of the extension of phase 1 of the Kildimo and Pallaskenry water scheme, County Limerick to include a connection to the Pallaskenry and Kildimo water distribution system. [16150/97]

Dan Neville

Ceist:

167 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the additional cost of the extension to phase 1 of the Kildimo and Pallaskenry water scheme, County Limerick to include the connection to the current schemes at Kildimo and Pallaskenry. [16151/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 164, 165, 166 and 167 together In 1991 Limerick County Council submitted to my Department a proposal to extend the Shannon estuary water supply scheme to serve the areas of Askeaton, Kildimo and Pallaskenry. Phase 1 of the scheme, costing £3.4 million, was approved earlier this year and is under construction at present. This will provide a 16 kilometre trunk main extension from Aughinish to Askeaton and Dromore Hill. To augment existing supplies to areas adjacent to Dromore, Limerick County Council, earlier this year, also sought approval to carry out additional pipeworks to the phase 1 contract at an estimated cost of £160,000 and this has been approved.

Phase 2 costing approximatley £2.6 million is designed to provide a new reservoir at Dromore and new distribution mains for Kildimo and Pallaskenry but, having regard to the existing high level of commitments under the water and sewerage investment programme, I cannot say when it may be possible to approve it. The planning of water supplies to local areas is the responsibility of the relevant local authority.
