Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Damage.

Denis Naughten

Ceist:

168 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on whether the damage done to county roads is partly as a result of the transportation of milk from farms; and the provisions, if any, he has to introduce weight restrictions on vehicles used for milk collection on county roads. [16208/97]

It is recognised that the transportation of milk from farms can be a contributory factor in damage caused to non-national roads. The maximum axle and vehicle weight limits for goods vehicles which now generally reflect corresponding EU limits are governed by the Road Traffic (Construction Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations 1963-97. There is no proposal at present to amend these. The application of road traffic regulations to limit use of public roads by certain categories of vehicle would be a matter for the relevant local authority to consider.
