Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - University Fees.

Deirdre Clune

Ceist:

278 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to abolish university fees for evening students in view of the fact that many similar courses are run during the daytime with no fees payable. [16513/97]

Any extension of the free fees initiative has of necessity to be considered in the context of available resources and other competing needs in the education sector. At present I am precluded by overall resource constraints from considering any extension of the free fees initiative to part-time courses. Part-time students can, however, claim tax relief, at the standard rate, in respect of their tuition fees for approved part-time third level courses.
