Vol. 481 No. 4

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

Brendan Howlin

Ceist:

44 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government whether he intends to continue the special county roads restoration fund; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16292/97]

Alan Shatter

Ceist:

56 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the proposals, if any, he has to maintain or improve the level of funding available for the maintenance of county roads, as envisaged in An Action Programme for the Millennium; the action, if any, he has taken to date in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16312/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 56 together.

I fully intend to honour the commitment given in An Action Programme for the Millennium to ensure increased funding for the maintenance of regional and county roads. On taking office I provided an immediate additional allocation of £5 million for the maintenance of Class 3 county roads. The question of further funding will be determined in the context of the 1998 Estimates.
