Vol. 482 No. 5

Written Answers - Competition Legislation.

Nora Owen

Ceist:

79 Mrs. Owen asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will bring forward amendments to the Competition Act, 1991; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18374/97]

Following the enactment of the Competition (Amendment) Act, 1996, my predecessor established the competition and mergers review group, under the chairmanship of Michael Collins, SC.

As part of its terms of reference, the group is charged with reviewing and making recommendations to me on the effectiveness of competition legislation and associated regulations. The review group is currently considering submissions in this regard, which it has received from interested parties. Any additional submissions which anyone might wish to make at this stage should be addressed to them in the first instance.

When I have received the final report of the review group and considered its recommendations, I will then decide whether to amend the competition Acts.
