Vol. 482 No. 5

Written Answers - Hospital Developments.

Brendan Daly

Ceist:

115 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has for development at Ennis General Hospital, County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18396/97]

Ennis General Hospital plays an important role in the delivery of acute hospital services to the people of County Clare. I am committed to further improving these services and last month I provided £50,000 to the hospital for new medical equipment.

As part of the Mid-Western Health Board's acute hospital strategy of providing specialist services locally, three new clinical specialties were introduced last year to Ennis General Hospital on both an out-patient and day care basis. These were urology, genito-urinary medicine and gynaecology.

In addition my Department provided the Mid-Western Health Board with development funding earlier this year to enable the specialties of haematology and oral surgery to be provided locally. The Mid-Western Health Board will also be recruiting an additional orthopaedic surgeon from this year's development funding to enable additional orthopaedic out-patient clinics to be held at Ennis General Hospital.
