Vol. 482 No. 5

Written Answers - Graffiti Offences.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

119 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if his Department's attention has been drawn to the escalation of graffiti and the problems this causes for local authorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18381/97]

: My Department is not aware of any local authority reporting a significant increase in the incidence of graffiti offences. The removal of graffiti on local authority property is a matter for individual local authorities. Where private property which is visible from a public place is defaced by writing or other marks it is open to a local authority under the Litter Pollution Act to require the owner or occupier of the property to remove or remedy the defacement.
