Vol. 483 No. 1

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay by a local authority (details supplied) in granting a third level grant to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin in view of the fact that the applicant's father meets the income requirements for this grant. [19918/97]

Officials of my Department have been informed by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the body statutorily entrusted with the administration of the higher education grants scheme, that a higher education grant application was received from the student in question on the 2 September 1997. The local authority accepted the late application and processed it accordingly. They wrote to the student on 19 September 1997 informing him he was ineligible for a higher education grant on the basis that his father's reckonable income exceeded the limits set down in the grants scheme.

However, they have since reviewed the case and have requested further income details from the applicant. On receipt of this information Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council will issue a decision in this case.
