Vol. 484 No. 1

Written Answers. - Provision of Cycleways.

Trevor Sargent

Ceist:

33 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation whether he will invest in a cycling infrastructure throughout the country that will capitalise on an interest in cycling holidays in Ireland, which will be encouraged by the hosting here of the opening stages of the 1998 Tour de France. [21431/97]

The Deputy will recall that I have already pointed out in my reply to him on 22 October 1997 that I have no role in the provision of cycleways or dedicated off-road cyclepaths. This is a matter for the Minster for the Environment and Local Government who I understand has replied to the Deputy in this matter.

The Operational Programme for Tourism, 1994-1999, however, does provide, under measure 4 of its product development sub-programme, for investment in the development of "themed" cycling routes. It also provides for assistance towards the provision of cycle hire and associated equipment, where the business involved has a demonstrable track record in developing overseas tourism.

As cycling is indeed a very healthy and enjoyable activity, I share the Deputy's hope that it will be encouraged by the hosting here of the opening stages of the 1998 Tour de France.
