Vol. 484 No. 1

Written Answers. - Millennium Celebrations.

Ruairí Quinn

Ceist:

82 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the plans, if any, he has for the State to celebrate the passing of the millennium; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21503/97]

I am anxious that Ireland's millennium celebrations will be clearly distinguishable from those of the rest of the world.

The success of the St. Patrick's Festival in Dublin over the last two years has convinced me that we can productively utilise this event as our launching pad in March 1999 and use it to kick off our millennium celebrations, using perhaps the theme of a major homecoming for the Irish, including those with Irish roots around the world.

I am at the moment discussing proposals from a number of interested parties and I expect to be in a position to announce plans early in the new year.
