As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Government decided in 1986 to allow detailed price control to lapse, with the consequent discontinuance of price surveillance by my Department.
Since then it has been the policy by successive Governments to promote increased competition throughout the economy. The Competition Acts outlaw anti-competitive practices that could impact adversely on the price and supply of goods. The Acts also provide for public enforcement.
