Vol. 485 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Status.

Billy Timmins

Ceist:

266 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to upgrade Greystones town commission to an urban district council; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23014/97]

The Local Government Act, 1994, provides for the repeal of the nineteenth century legislation governing the establishment of urban district councils. It is the aim to bring forward legislation next year for the modernisation of local government law generally. This will include a modern statutory framework for local authority structures with provision for the creation of new local authorities. Any proposals for change in the status of current authorities will have to be considered within the framework of proposed legislation.
