Ceist:

279 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the number of nominations that can be made, through his Department, to the boards of semi-State bodies and other Government agencies; the current holders of these nominations; and the terms of office they are currently serving. [22936/97]

The statutory agencies operating under the aegis of my Department are the Combat Poverty Agency, the Pensions Board and the National Social Service Board.

The National Social Service Board comprises 15 members including the chairperson. This is the maximum membership allowed under current legislation. No nominations are made to the board. All members are appointed by the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs. Members of the board serve for a period of three years. The chairperson was appointed on 13 June 1995 and the rest of the board members were appointed on 1 September 1995. The current membership is:

Current legislation provides that the number of members of the board of the Combat Poverty Agency at any one time shall not be less than eight or more than 16. Nominations are not made to the agency. Under the Labour Services Act, 1987, the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs is consulted by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment in relation to the appointment of a member of the board of An Foras (FÁS), who is representative of social welfare interests. Mr. Seán MacLoinnsigh, an officer of my Department was appointed as a member of the board on 1 January 1993 for a period of five years.
