Vol. 486 No. 5

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John Bruton

Ceist:

87 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will initiate planning for the provision of a second level school in the Mornington, Laytown and Bettystown area in view of the fact that existing planning permission provides for an increase in the population of this area from 3,600 to approximately 8,000 people within the immediate future; and the requirement to ensure that land is allocated in time for second level schooling development. [2915/98]

Primary school leavers from the Mornington, Laytown and Bettystown areas generally attend second-level schools in Drogheda, County Louth. There are seven such schools in Drogheda and these can cater adequately for the needs of these areas, at present.

The planning section of my Department will liaise with the relevant authorities with regard to current and proposed housing developments and demographic trends generally to ensure that sufficient pupil places will continue to be available for pupils from the areas in question.
