Ceist:

182 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Finance the number of people identified by the Revenue Commissioners as having gross incomes in excess of £50,000 per annum; the total income tax paid by these persons in each of the past five years; the number of persons having gross incomes in excess of £100,000 per annum; and the total income tax paid by these persons in the past five years. [2996/98]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the relevant information available is in relation to the income tax liability of income tax units with gross incomes in excess of £50,000 and £100,000 for the income tax years 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98.

The following is the information requested in so far as it is available:

Taxpayers with gross incomes in excess of £50,000 and £100,000 from 1993-94 to 1997-98.

A married couple who has elected or has been deemed to have elected for joint assessment is counted as one tax unit.
The figures in the table for 1993-94 are based on income distribution statistics published in the Statistical Reports of the Revenue Commissioners for 1995, but are adjusted for under-coverage in the published figures. The figures for 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97 and 1997-98 are projected estimates and are subject to revision.
