Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme.

John Gormley

Ceist:

232 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on criticism that potential participants in the urban renewal/integrated area plan for Sligo Corporation and County Council areas have been put at a disadvantage by being given only two weeks to submit documents, including maps, and that the designated Sligo Corporation official has not been fully available for this period; and if he will extend the closing date for these applications beyond 4 February 1998. [3408/98]

The guidelines which my Department issued to the local authorities last November, under which integrated area plans —IAPs —for the purposes of the new urban renewal scheme were to be submitted not later than 31 March 1998, stated that "Wide, cross-sectoral consultation and involvement should form an essential element in IAP preparation." More recently, my Department wrote to the local authorities on 30 January, reminding them of their obligations in this regard. Local arrangements for consultation and participation by interested parties, including any deadline for submission of documents, etc. to local authorities, as well as internal staffing arrangements, are a matter for individual local authorities themselves. It is not open to me to extend any local deadline set in this regard.
