Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Deployment.

Ivor Callely

Ceist:

266 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the breakdown of his Department's personnel in each Garda station in the Dublin metropolitan area; the number and type of vehicle available to each station; the other support services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3092/98]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of Garda resources and personnel to different areas. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about supplying the kind of detailed information relating to Garda personnel and resources sought by the Deputy, on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally. However, I can give the details of personnel on a district basis for each of the six operational divisions in the Dublin metropolitan area and the following numbers incorporates all ranks and are valid as of 31 January 1998:

The Garda authorities also report that assistance to local units is provided as necessary, by the many special units which operate both in the Dublin metropolitan area and countrywide. These specialist units include the National Traffic Policy Bureau, the National Drugs Unit, the National Bureau of Crime Investigation, the special detective unit and the air support unit as well as support from the dog unit and underwater unit.
The Garda authorities also inform me that the deployment of official vehicles within a particular division is a matter for the divisional officer and the breakdown of mobile units, both cars and motorcycles, on a divisional basis is as follows:
