Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Ceist:

290 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will establish curfews for young people in the late evenings, as has been undertaken in other jurisdictions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3343/98]

The Children Bill, 1996, contains a provision which will allow courts to order children, who have been found guilty of offences, to remain in a particular residence during specified times during the evening and night. The courts will also have the power to order such children not to be at or to frequent any particular premises, place or locality during specified days or times.

The Children Bill has already passed Second Stage in this House and the motion restoring it to the Order Paper is due to be moved today.
