Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Irish Language.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

306 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science the steps, if any, that have been taken by each regional technical college or institute of technology to comply with their statutory obligation to foster the Irish language and culture. [2995/98]

Under the terms of the Regional Technical Colleges Act, 1992 and the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992, the governing body of each institute is charged with the management and control of that institute's affairs. The legislation also imposes a duty on the governing body, in performing its duties, to have due regard to the preservation, promotion and use of the Irish language and to the preservation and development of the national culture. I understand that a seminar, supported by Bord na Gaeilge, was held in 1994 at which many of the issues relevant to these matters were considered in a sector-wide context.

I also understand that a range of measures for the promotion of the Irish language and culture are being put in place throughout the sector. These include the use of bilingual signage and forms, the setting up of the Irish language groups and the organising of programmes both through Irish and dealing with Irish cultural studies.
