Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Computerisation Programme.

Michael Ring

Ceist:

309 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when a school (details supplied) in County Mayo will receive the computer facilities promised by the Government. [3044/98]

As stated in Schools IT 2000 —A Policy Framework for the New Millennium, the National Centre for Technology in Education, NCTE, recently established in Dublin City University, will have operational responsibility for the national implementation of the Schools IT 2000 project. As part of this remit the NCTE will put appropriate equipment procurement arrangements for schools in place.

It is expected that the recently appointed director of the NCTE, along with four co-ordinators who are in the process of being appointed, will commence duty in the very near future. In the interim, my Department, in partnership with Telecom Éireann, is distributing a questionnaire to first and second level schools with a view to determining how IT 2000 can be of initial assistance to every school. Responses to this questionnaire will help clarify information and communication technology requirements in schools.
