261 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the further measures, if any, he will take to counter paedophilia. [3324/98]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 45 and 261 together.
A discussion paper on sexual offences is being prepared in my Department. Its purpose will be to stimulate public debate on the laws relating to sexual offences, and on possible changes to these laws. The paper will also address the complex issues surrounding the compilation and maintenance of a paedophile, or more general sex offenders, register, and the many issues arising from the existence of such a register. I expect to be in a position to publish the paper in the near future.
