Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - EU Funding.

John Bruton

Ceist:

105 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the funds, if any, his Department or agencies under its aegis are receiving from the Community Support Framework of the EU; and, if so, the steps, if any, he is taking to ensure that the private sector are allowed to participate in tendering for grants under the operational programme on the basis of criteria set down in advance as agreed as part of the mid-term review of the Community Support Framework. [22692/97]

My Department is in receipt of relatively minor levels of EU funding under the Human Resource Operational Programme of the Community Support Framework 1994-99.

Arising out of the mid-term review of the Community Support Framework, an additional allocation of 1 million ECU (£750,000) was allocated to my Department from 1998-1999 to begin to develop a childcare infrastructure.

An employer demonstration childcare initiative is being developed in partnership with IBEC. The focus of this initiative is to stimulate and develop employer involvement in supporting childcare measures. Details of this initiative which will incorporate EU, Exchequer and private sector funding will be announced in the near future. Applications from employers for inclusion in this initiative will be assessed in accordance with criteria which have been set out in a strategy which has been included in the human resources operational programme.
