Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Afforestation Aid.

Joe Higgins

Ceist:

135 Mr. Higgins (Dublin West) asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the amount of public grant aid received by Coillte in 1997 in relation to afforestation under EU Council Regulation 2080/92; and the way in which he reconciles these payments with the EU regulations governing the definition of a farmer. [3402/98]

Coillte received the following amounts in 1997 in respect of afforestation under Council Regulation (EEC) No. 2080/92:

Afforestation Grants

Premiums

Maintenance Grants

Total

£

£

£

£

895,143

1,697,073

1,013,000

3,605,216

(851 ha)

(18,784 ha)

(2,846 ha)

Under the regulation, afforestation and maintenance grants are the same for farmers and non-farmers. The definition of farmer is relevant only in respect of the payment of premium with the regulation providing for a higher level of premium for farmers than for non-farmers. Coillte comes under the non-farmer category.
