Vol. 486 No. 6

Written Answers. - Inland Fisheries.

136.

asked the Minister for the

Marine and Natural Resources the plans, if any, he has to introduce by-laws to close the eel fishery on the Corrib system in 1998; and the timescale involved in this regard. [3403/98]

The Western Regional Fisheries Board has advised that it is completing a consultation process with all interested parties with a view to preparing a long-term management strategoy for eel fishing in the Corrib system.

I am also advised the management strategy is likely to involve the submission by the board to me of an application for a by-law to underpin the enforcement of any conservation measures agreed as necessary under the management strategy.

Any such application for a by-law when received will be considered and progressed as quickly as possible with a view to assisting the objective of ensuring optimum conservation and management strategies for eel stocks on the Corrib system.
