Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Local Authority Rents.

Pat Carey

Ceist:

112 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if local authority rents can be deducted at source from all social welfare payments as in the case with the one parent family payments; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3678/98]

The household budgeting scheme operated by my Department facilitates the deduction at source of local authority rents and other essential payments from a number of social welfare payments. The scheme is operated on behalf of my Department by An Post.

Currently the scheme is available to those in receipt of unemployment payments and one parent family payments and it has recently been extended to those in receipt of disability allowance.

There are 64 local authorities participating in the scheme and 12,337 people were availing of the scheme at the end of January 1998.
