Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Ferris

Ceist:

12 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress, if any, which has been made with regard to the light replacement classrooms for Crescent comprehensive college, Limerick which are required following a fire; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3558/98]

My Department has taken a number of steps to rectify the damage caused by fire last year at Crescent College comprehensive school, Dooradoyle, Limerick. A senior architect from the planning and building unit of my Department visited the school the day after the fire, consultants were employed and immediate approval was given for the clearance of the fire damaged area and necessary safety works. Prefabricated accommodation was put in place within weeks of the fire. The renovation of home economics rooms and remedial internal works took place during the year. I also visited the school last September and assured a delegation representing the entire school community that all necessary steps would be taken to construct the replacement buildings in as quick a timeframe as possible. The design team is currently working on the architectural design of the replacement buildings. It is expected that stage three, that is, the developed sketch scheme, of my Department's design team procedures will be completed shortly.
