Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Regional Technical Colleges.

Jack Wall

Ceist:

63 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science the reasons the academic department of Cork Institute of Technology (formerly Cork Regional Technical College) expended 20.7 per cent of the £70.055 million budget for the Regional Technical College sector's academic departments in the academic year 1994-95 and the academic department of Waterford Institute of Technology (formerly Waterford Regional Technical College) expended only 10.96 per cent of the same budget in the same period, bearing in mind that there were 156 more full-time and 4,330 more part-time students at CIT compared with WIT in that academic year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3562/98]

My Department does not allocate specific amounts for academic departments in institutes of technology. The annual budget for each institute is allocated on the basis of its total pay and non-pay requirements following consideration of its annual programmes and budget submission. The allocation takes into account the complexity of each institute, the range of courses and facilities offered to students, the total number of students (both full-time and part-time) and the nature of the infrastructure.
