Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Pupil-teacher Ratios.

Bernard J. Durkan

Ceist:

91 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans if any he has for a further improvement in pupil-teacher ratios with particular reference to disadvantaged areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3671/98]

My capacity to improve pupil-teacher ratios in any given year, including the ratios applicable to schools in disadvantaged areas, is entirely dependent on resource availability.

In March 1997, the outgoing Minister for Education agreed staffing arrangements for the 1997-98 school year with the Irish National Teachers' Organisation. These arrangements were based on the allocation of surplus posts available for redistribution from the demographic dividend for the 1997-98 school year.
I am reviewing overall arrangements in relation to teacher post allocations, with a view to ensuring that all available resources are targeted to maximum effect. The need of schools in disadvantaged areas will be considered in this context.
