Vol. 487 No. 2

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

John Browne

Ceist:

97 Mr. Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of children who are awaiting assessment by a psychologist in relation to education needs. [3624/98]

My Department provides a psychological service to all second level schools, to primary schools designated as disadvantaged in the cities of Dublin, Cork and Limerick and to all primary schools in south Tipperary. The Department psychologists assess pupils for a variety of reasons. These include new referrals, reviews of progress in the case of pupils previously assessed and applications for special arrangements in certificate examinations. It is estimated that approximately 1,300 such cases are at various stages of processing and finalisation by the Department's psychological service in the schools served across both sectors. This figure does not include pupils who have been referred to psychologists employed by regional health boards or voluntary bodies or to psychologists in private practice.
