Vol. 487 No. 3

Written Answers. - BSE Compensation.

Paul Bradford

Ceist:

131 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason a person (details supplied) in County Cork has not received the 1996 slaughter premium and BSE compensation payment. [3979/98]

The person named applied for 1996 deseasonalisation slaughter premium on a total on 86 animals. All of the animals applied for were found eligible and three payments totalling £4,702.12 issued to him on 9 August 1996, 14 November 1996 and 4 December 1996.

In addition, 1996 deseasonalisation slaughter premium scheme applicants who had steers slaughtered within the period 25 March 1996 to 9 June 1996 qualified for an automatic BSE compensation top-up at the rate of £50.00 per head. The person named was found to have slaughtered 31 animals within the period. A BSE compensation payment of £1,550.00 issued to him on 14 October 1996.

Ceist:

132 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when a person (details supplied) in County Cork will receive full payment due to him under the BSE compensation scheme. [3980/98]

The person named applied under the 1997 agri-monetary compensation scheme on a total of 16 animals. Payment has issued in respect of seven.

It was a condition of the scheme that in order to qualify for compensation, animals must have been in the ownership and possession of herdowners prior to 1 April 1997 and in this context herdowners who applied for compensation on more than 15 animals were required to submit supporting documentation with their applications.

On 31 December 1997, the local livestock office requested the person named to submit the necessary ownership proof for the remaining seven animals to enable payment to be considered. To date, this has not been done.
