Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Flood Relief.

Tony Gregory

Ceist:

268 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands if arrangements will be made for the cleaning of the gulleys in the Phoenix Park, Dublin 20 to prevent a recurrence of the recent serious flooding at Lower Martin's Row, Dublin 20. [4903/98]

There is no evidence to suggest that the intermittent flooding experienced in the Chapelizod area, which I understand usually occurs during periods of heavy rain, is attributable to drainage in the Phoenix Park.

However, in late 1996 in an endeavour to reduce the potential for flooding both inside and outside the park, works were carried out to a number of culverts which outfall from the Phoenix Park through Martin's Row and Chapelizod to the Liffey. Furthermore, a sustained programme of drainage and maintenance is in place in the Phoenix Park to reduce the potential for flooding and ensure that the gulleys are functioning correctly.
