Ceist:

64 Mr. C. Lenihan asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if she will give an interim approval to the Luas project team to begin work on their proposed maintenance depot at the M50 roundabout in view of the employment potential this project has for Dublin south west. [4514/98]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 62 and 64 together.

In line with provisions of the Transport (Dublin Light Rail) Act, 1996 the application by CIE for a light railway order in respect of the Tallaght-Dundrum line is the subject of a statutory public inquiry. The inspector has adjourned that inquiry pending the completion of the underground study. It is not possible to commence work on any part of the proposed light rail line, including the proposed maintenance depot, pending the granting of a light railway order to CIE.

As I have a quasi-judicial role in relation to the statutory approval process for the order, it would not be appropriate to make any comment in relation to the light rail line which is the subject of a formal application.
