Vol. 487 No. 6

Written Answers - Inland Waterways.

Beverley Flynn

Ceist:

99 Ms Cooper-Flynn asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if the section of the River Moy, which has been leased to the east Mayo anglers for the past 40 years, will continue to be leased to the club in view of the fact that it provides a great benefit to local anglers and is a major tourist attraction in the area. [4529/98]

The leasing of State-owned fisheries is the responsibility of the Central and Regional Fisheries Boards.

The Central Fisheries Board has advised that leasing arrangements for 1998 and future years, to which the Deputy refers, are being proposed, and will be kept under review, in the context of the significant angling development programme on the Moy to be carried out this year under the tourism angling measure. The East Mayo Anglers Association has been advised by the Central Fisheries Board of the leasing proposals for 1998 and of the intention to engage in a consultative process with the anglers and other concerned parties on future management and development strategies for the fishery. I have requested the Central Fisheries Board to arrange with the North Western Regional Fisheries Board for early consultations with the Deputy and the east Mayo anglers to discuss and clarify the present position and proposed future directions.
