Vol. 489 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Policies.

David Stanton

Ceist:

282 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he has satisfied himself that school authorities have formulated agreed school policies in relation to commercial promotions in view of Circular 38/91; the number of schools which have formulated such policies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8114/98]

Circular 38/91 requested school authorities to consider carefully the implications of allowing any situation to develop which would result in parents being put under undue pressure to purchase a particular commercial product and to formulate agreed school policies in relation to commercial promotions. The ultimate responsibility for formulating such policies rests with the managerial authority of each individual school.

There is no requirement on schools to inform the Department of the policies which they have formulated and, consequently, I am not in a position to supply the information sought by the Deputy.
